Comparison of Prevalence of Depression and Its Risk Factors among the Elderly Female and Male Living Alone in Korea

Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of depression and its risk factors among the elderly female and male living alone in Korea.

Methods: A total of 1,462 of the elderly female and male living alone from 2011 Report on the Korean National Older Adults Life Survey were selected.

Results: There is no difference in prevalence of depression between the elderly female and male living alone. Depression was more prevalent as the elderly female living alone who have received basic livelihood support; in the elderly female who contacted with relatives or friends less than everyday; as the elderly female with 3 and more of diagnosed diseases; in the elderly female who slept less than 6 hours; as the elderly female who can hardly climb stairs without respite. Depression of the elderly male living alone was affected by lower education level, residential areas; home ownership, diagnosed diseases, and BMI.

Conclusion: The finding of differences in prevalence of depression and its risk factors between elderly female and male living alone is expected to promote the differentiated strategy for the elderly female and male living alone at risk of depression in Korea.
